History of Cane Furniture

Cane furniture originated in the South Asia area, primarily in India. Cane furniture first came around in the 2nd century A.D. in India as well as China. The Indian Rajas or Kings would build heavily ornamented and the cane furniture would have the prestige of royalty.

However, when the British East India trading company began importing cane to Europe the cane furniture become wildly fashionable. Thusly, the great movement of cane furniture began from India to countries like the United Kingdom, and Netherlands.

However, not all countries embraced cane furniture. France did not like the over the top display of cane furniture during the Regence. Despite this Louis XV had a few pieces of cane furniture in his palace.

Thomas Sherton believed that bed boards should be made out of cane because it was light, elastic, clean, durable. When cane furniture developed into English style cane furniture, it was then used in many other countries like Germany, Spain, and America. Here is a fun tidbit the council members of Williamsburg, Virginia all had cane furniture in the 18th century.

Cane furniture to this very day is still very fashionable. It is seen on patio decks, porches, and in living rooms. The comforting aura that one gets from cane furniture is like nothing anyone has ever experienced. I would strongly recommend that a person get cane furniture for his or her home no matter how small.
